03-2016 | Hai Kwang revamps electric arc furnaces "A" e "B"

Hai Kwang EAF furnaces "A" e "B"

BRAR successfully concluded revamping project of furnace EAF ”A” and EAF”B” at Hai Kwang in Taiwan. The Customer was really satisfied signing the final acceptance certificate.

Customer targets

The Customer target was to improve the furnaces performances from electrical point of view, specially:

-        Improve the electric current balance in the 3 phases

-        Decrease the refractory consumption

-        Increase the furnaces efficiency

-        Decrease the electric power consumption

New Aluminum Power Conducting Arms

Brar focused on the design of new electrode arms, changing from existing traditional design to Aluminum power conducting arms in order to have lower reactance an better current balance. Aluminum power conducting arms was selected as lighter than steel-copper arms, in order to make no modifications on hydraulics.

Aluminum power conducting arms supplied have an inter-changeable design for lateral phases (each lateral arm can be assembled on phase 1 or 3)

Furnaces

Furnace A: capacity 40t, electrode from 18” to 20”, current 45kA

Furnace B: capacity 50t, electrode 22”, current 50kA

Results

The results and benefits were very interesting and important, as per Dip test reports made by SGL on furnace “B”, which confirms that:

-        Better current balance between the phases

-        Current un-balance reduction from 11,97% to 6,39% with new arms

-        Reduction of reactance of more than 10%

-        Improvement of refractory index

-        Better efficiency of the furnace

-        Lower electric power consumption
